DTF (Direct to Film) Heat Transfers: Versatile, Full-Color Prints on Demand
At Sunnyside Custom Apparel, we offer DTF (Direct to Film) heat transfers as a cutting-edge printing solution that combines full-color capability, fabric versatility, and impressive durability. Whether you're creating custom tees, hoodies, or performance wear, DTF delivers crisp, vibrant designs that hold up wash after wash.
What is DTF (Direct to Film) Printing?
DTF is a heat transfer process where your design is printed onto a special film using water-based inks, then transferred to a garment using heat and pressure. Unlike older heat transfer methods, DTF can reproduce high-detail, full-color graphics on a wide variety of fabric types—including cotton, polyester, blends, and more.
The DTF Process: Step-by-Step
1. Design Preparation
Your artwork is prepped digitally, allowing for full-color images with gradients, fine details, and effects.
2. Film Printing
The design is printed in reverse onto a clear PET film using specialized DTF inks. A layer of white ink is printed underneath to make colors pop on any fabric.
3. Adhesive Powder Application
A special hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink and then cured to bond the ink and film.
4. Heat Press Application
The printed film is heat-pressed onto your garment. After pressing, the film is peeled away—leaving a vibrant, flexible design behind.
5. Final Curing
An additional quick press may be used to enhance durability and finish.
What Types of Designs Work Best with DTF?
DTF is a game-changer for full-color printing, especially for:
- Photorealistic Images & Gradients
Perfect for artwork with shading, blends, and detail that other methods struggle with.
- Complex, Multi-Color Graphics
No need to separate colors or create screens—DTF prints it all in one pass.
- On-Demand Customization
Ideal for small batch orders, one-offs, or personalization (like names/numbers).
- All Fabric Types
Cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, canvas—you name it. DTF sticks and stays.
What Doesn’t Work as Well with DTF?
While DTF is extremely versatile, it may not be the best choice when:
- You want textured finishes
Unlike embroidery, DTF has a smooth feel with a slightly rubbery surface.
- You prefer a super-soft “vintage” look
DTF sits on top of the fabric, so it may feel more prominent than direct-to-garment (DTG) or screen printing.
- You’re printing on very heat-sensitive materials
Some delicate fabrics may not tolerate the high temperature of the heat press.
When is DTF the Best Option?
DTF is ideal when:
✅ You want a full-color design—fast.
There’s no need for color limits, screens, or long setup times.
✅ You’re working with complex or detailed artwork.
Fine lines, gradients, and photographic prints are no problem.
✅ You need small quantities or on-demand prints.
No minimums required—DTF is great for short runs, samples, or dropshipping.
✅ You’re printing on a variety of materials.
From cotton tees to performance wear to tote bags, DTF does it all.
